Financial Aid and Grants for Doctoral Students

YNU offers various financial aid and scholarship programs to enable doctoral students to actively pursue their studies without being hampered by any economic disadvantages.

Financial Aid

JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists (Department in charge: Grant Section)

* Intended for doctoral studies

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science funds brilliant young researchers so they can focus on their graduate studies with the aim of producing and recruiting creative future leaders of scientific research in Japan.

Fellowship by category: DC1 (first year of doctoral study) 200,000 yen/month
DC2 (second or later year of doctoral study) 200,000 yen/month

JASSO Scholarship Programs (Department in charge: Financial Aid Section)

* Intended for master’s and doctoral studies

The Japan Student Services Organization extends loans, which are divided into interest-free Category 1 and interest-bearing Category 2, to university students. A briefing session on loan reservation is planned in early October.

Category 1 (interest-free): 122,200 yen per month for doctoral studies
Category 1 (interest-free): 88,000 yen per month for master’s studies
Category 2 (interest-bearing): Options of 50,000, 80,000, 100,000, 130,000, or 150,000 yen per month

Category 1: 34 master’s students 2 doctoral students
Category 2: 5 master’s students No doctoral students

YNU Tuition Waiver Program (Department in charge: Financial Aid Section)

* Intended for master’s and doctoral studies

Each semester, YNU awards a full or half tuition waiver for selected applicants among economically disadvantaged students with excellent academic performance.

Full waiver: 267,900 yen per semester
Half waiver: 133,950 yen per semester

Full waiver (Spring semester): 29 master’s students 12 doctoral students
(Fall semester): 30 master’s students 11 doctoral students
Half waiver (Spring semester): 17 master’s students 11 doctoral students
(Fall semester): 17 master’s students 12 doctoral students

Research Assistantship (Department in charge: EIS)

* Intended for doctoral studies

As a form of aid, YNU employs research assistants among doctoral students who applied for tuition waivers and were granted only a half waiver or no waiver.

Note that the following are not eligible: JSPS research fellows, recipients of scholarship worth more than the tuition (excluding JASSO loan recipients), working professionals and other students with a certain level of income, repeaters (leaves of absence may be taken into account), government-sponsored international students, international students representing foreign governments, or the like.

Recipients of a half tuition waiver: Allowance worth a quarter of 267,900 yen
Recipients of no tuition waivers: Allowance worth a half of 267,900 yen
* Recipients in Academic Year 2021-22: 12 persons

Teaching Assistant (Department in charge: EIS)

* Intended for master’s and doctoral studies

YNU offers teaching assistant positions as training opportunities for graduate students to become teachers or researchers while receiving allowance to support their studies.

* Recipients in Academic Year 2021-22: 173 master’s students 33 doctoral students

EIS Diversity Scholarship Program (Department in charge: EIS Office)

* Intended for doctoral studies

EIS awards scholarships for its doctoral students with disabilities or economic difficulties associated with childcare, nursing care, or the like. Applications may be filed by prospective applicants to doctoral programs at EIS.
Intended monthly scholarship of 30,000 yen for five months

* Recipients in Academic Year 2021-22: 1 person

Educational and Research Grants

YNU International Academic Exchange Grant Program (Department in charge: EIS Office)

* Intended for master’s and doctoral studies

YNU encourages active research activities among students by awarding grants for conducting studies and presenting research findings at international conferences or the like.
Grant recipients are chosen among applicants according to their intended destinations.

* Recipients in Academic Year 2021-22: 1 master’s student 1 doctoral student (online conference)
* Recipients in Academic Year 2020-21: 2 master’s students (online conferences)  
* Recipients in Academic Year 2019-20: 4 master’s students 4 doctoral students

Support for Presentations at International Conferences (Department in charge: EIS Office)

* Intended for master’s and doctoral studies

The program covers necessary expenses for initiatives carried out abroad by master’s students enrolled in Seminar in Globalization or doctoral students enrolled in Advanced Seminar in Globalization offered for them to grow into global talents.

* Recipients in Academic Year 2020-21:

* Recipients in Academic Year 2019-20:
(1) Short-term student exchange (summer school) with College of Engineering, Peking University: 7 persons
(2) Mutual visits and training with Dalian University of Technology: 4 persons in May 8 persons in September
(3) Mutual visits and training with Prince of Songkla University: 2 persons
(4) Thai Camp hosted by Prince of Songkla University: 8 persons
(5) Programs approved by the dean: 7 persons

EIS Joint Research Project (Assignment C) (Department in charge: EIS)

* Intended for doctoral studies

EIS allocates research funding for research projects independently conducted by its students, which are reviewed and selected among new project proposals.

* Recipients in Academic Year 2021-22: 11 persons
