CALL FOR APPLICANTS
Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences,
Yokohama National University, through a MEXT Scholarship
The Department of Information Environment is recruiting international students who wish to enroll in its doctoral program entitled "Education Program for Highly Developed Information Environments with Mathematical Science and Informatics" from October 2022 through a MEXT Scholarship (Special Program for the Provision of Japanese Government Grants to University-Recommended International Students [Special Quota for Research Students]).
The purpose of this program is to foster human resources who will focus on the information environment (i.e., the optimal framework for handling the information available to us) with the aim of leading the way in promoting advanced mathematical science or advanced informatics or will be able to create social value by making full use of mathematical science techniques and informatics and analyzing big data.

2.ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
a. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following general requirements.
- Be in good mental and physical health.
- Possess the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
- Have, in principle, been born on or after April 2, 1987.
- Be able to arrive in Japan before the 2022 fall semester begins.
b. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following academic requirements.
- Have an outstanding academic record at both the undergraduate and master's levels and demonstrate exceptional research potential.**
- Have earned or be expected to earn a master's degree.
- Demonstrate proficiency in English or Japanese (i.e., meet the official score requirement for TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent).***
** : You must have demonstrated academic excellence with a grade point average of 2.30 (out of 3.00) or higher and be expected to maintain an equivalent level throughout the scholarship period.
*** : You must have passed N2 in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test or obtained a score in an English language proficiency test (e.g., TOEFL iBT, TOEIC Listening and Reading, or IELTS Academic Module) that is equivalent to CEFR level B2 or higher (or be judged by YNU to possess a level of proficiency in English that is equivalent to CEFR level B2 or higher).
3.APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND DOCUMENTS

Note that you must sign the Application Form before submission. - (2) Field of Study and Research Plan (Research Proposal) (Word template)
- (3) Copy of your passport
Note that you must submit a scanned copy of the page containing your full name, nationality, date of birth, and photo. - (4) Official academic transcripts (graduate and undergraduate)
Submit the original academic transcripts. They must indicate the term and year that you attended the courses, your grades and/or scores, and the number of credits that you earned for each course (if applicable). - (5) Academic Performance Entry Sheet

Read the notes provided on the sheet carefully and then fill in the relevant information from "(4) Official academic transcripts". Note that your grade point average must be 2.30 (out of 3.00) or higher. - (6) Certificate of Graduation (or Certificate of Expected Graduation)
- (7) Official Letter of Recommendation
Note that your Official Letter of Recommendation must be from a high-ranking person (e.g., Dean or Director) and addressed to the President of YNU (Word template) - (8) Photograph.
Note that you must submit a 4.5 × 3.5 cm photograph of yourself that has been taken within the last six months and shows your upper body and full face. You must not wear a hat. Attach it to "(1) Application Form". - (9) Thesis abstract
Submit an abstract if you have written a thesis. In addition, attach a list of published books, papers, reports and conference presentations that demonstrate their achievements and abilities (if any). - (10) Documents that demonstrate your linguistic ability
Submit a grade certificate for a Japanese or English proficiency test (see Section 2-b for details). You must have taken the test within two years preceding the submission of your application.
a. APPLICATION PROCEDURE
You are required to contact your prospective supervisor to obtain provisional acceptance prior to submitting your application. A list of the faculty members in the Department of Information Environment can be found here. You are required to choose a suitable supervisor to oversee your work in your chosen research field.
After you have received provisional acceptance from your prospective supervisor, e-mail all of the application documents to either one of the contact faculty members (see below for details) for the educational program that you wish to enroll in by the application deadline.
Note that you must prove in "(5) Academic Performance Entry Sheet (Excel)" (see Section 3-b) that you meet the grade point average requirement (see Section 2-b). You must also prove in "(10) Documents that demonstrate your linguistic ability" (see Section 3-b) that you meet the linguistic requirements (see Section 2-b). You are not required to submit the original documents (or certified true copies issued by a public institution, such as your university) at the time of application. If your application is successful and you wish to be recommended to MEXT, submit the documents to the following address by Express Mail Service (EMS) during the designated submission period.

c. SELECTION PROCEDURE
We will select the best-qualified candidates based on the submitted documents. Our decision will take into account your academic achievements in your previous degrees and your research potential based on your academic documents, recommendation letter, field of interest, and study plan.
During the selection process, we may ask the shortlisted candidates to attend an interview via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or another suitable platform. We will e-mail you the selection results by mid-February, 2022.
If selected, you may be asked to make some corrections to your application or submit some extra documents as part of the official procedure. The list of selected candidates will be sent to MEXT for final approval.
