Artificial Environment

1. Departments and educational programs

Our graduate school has the following three departments: the Department of Artificial Environment, the Department of Natural Environment, and the Department of Information Environment. Each of these departments offers three educational programs with predetermined courses that students must or can take before they acquire their intended types of degrees. Each student must decide their educational program (and the degree they want to pursue) when they enroll. The educational programs are offered with a clear definition of the knowledge, skills, and expertise that the holders of the respective degrees are expected to possess.

The studies conducted in this department address not only cities and industrial plants built with artificial structures, but also the way people live and interact with local communities. This program is designed to help students acquire an understanding of the advanced and practical engineering technologies that are required to ensure safety and security in the sustainable society that they help to create under an artificial environment, which is made up of humans and physical objects. The department also instills an ability to explore the problems that need to be resolved for the social implementation of such technologies.
Safety, Environment and System Engineering Program (Master of Engineering)

This program is designed to cultivate knowledge and skills for the following: designing cities, industrial plants, infrastructure, and energy stations; devising disaster response measures; ensuring evacuation routes and swift recovery in the event of a disaster; and considering safety and security from the perspective of safety engineering.

This program focuses on the way in which people live in an artificial environment with the aim of producing professionals who are capable of exploring the ideal roles to be played by corporate management and local governments, as well as the safety and security of the environment with due consideration given to welfare and health.

(Doctoral programs)

The studies conducted in this department address engineering technologies for industrial plants, infrastructure, and local communities in order to realize a safe, hospitable, and sustainable society. Students not only acquire the advanced knowledge and skills required to socially implement such technologies, but also develop the ability to lead their respective fields of expertise in creating new systems and services for creating a safe, hospitable society while giving due consideration to stakeholders and know-how from other fields.
Safety, Environment and System Engineering Program (Doctor of Engineering)

This program is designed to cultivate knowledge and skills for the following: designing cities, industrial plants, infrastructure, and energy stations; devising disaster response measures; ensuring evacuation routes and swift recovery in the event of a disaster; and promoting new technologies. This department aims to foster problem-solvers who are able to consider, in an integrated manner, the physical environment that consists of artificial objects and the people who live in this environment. They need to be able to derive adequate solutions by gaining a cross-sectional and panoramic understanding of problems rather than focusing on the technical or management aspects. Prospective students from diverse backgrounds are welcomed if they aspire to make a social contribution by engaging in the following research and challenges while seeking to adopt ever wider perspectives.
  • The pursuit of various types of knowledge and skills in engineering and management methods with the aim of promoting new technologies for ensuring the safety of artificial environments and systems.
  • The pursuit of the knowledge and management methods involved in monitoring the actual state and impact of contamination and other problems caused by artificial environments, as well as implementing the necessary measures and policies in our society.
  • The pursuit of knowledge and skills related to the policies, strategies, and management involved in conducting various corporate and other organized activities aimed at identifying and overcoming challenges to the sustainability of human society and social implementation of conducive technologies.
