Admissions Policy

Master's Program

Master's Program (173 student admitted per year)

The program seeks applications from a broad range of students across both humanities and sciences, who have the potential to contribute to the resolution of issues in natural, artificial and information environments and to the realization of a sustainable society as experts working in the context of diverse environmental problems, rapidlyevolving information science and social innovations.

Department of Environment and Natural Sciences (40 students)

This department aims to convey an ideal global environment for mankind based on a holistic approach to complex, hierarchical terrestrial life systems, from molecular and cellular-level micro-systems to terrestrial and ecological macro-systems. The department is therefore seeking applicants who are eager to undertake the required course of study as well as conduct experiments and surveys to solve problems with logical and flexible ideas, namely:

  1. Persons with a broad interest in the global environment as well as natural, living phenomena who possess a strong motivation to tackle global environmental issues.
  2. Persons who are capable of undertaking both indoor laboratory and outdoor field surveys with enthusiasm.
  3. Persons who possess their own thoughts on the future of the global environment, are capable of serious contemplation of relevant issues, and who want to work towards the achievement of that future.

Department of Environment and System Sciences (40 students)

This department seeks to contribute to the realization of a recycle-based society including the recycling of artificial materials by preparing practical and creative graduates who can respond to issues of global significance and work in a broad range of fields with a high level of expertise. The department trains personnel with sophisticated expertise ranging from policymaking, and planning to green manufacturing and in-depth consulting based on education on: manufacturing with an awareness of device, machine and structure-forming material recycling, environmental burdens and resource recycling; technologies for the formation, maintenance and management of eco-conscious artificial spatial and mobile systems; and system design techniques.

- The Material Systems Course seeks students who possess a fundamental knowledge of eco-friendly material development and analysis and who are willing to undertake their studies with a creative and flexible mindset.

- The System Design Course seeks motivated applicants with a fundamental understanding of the formation, control, maintenance and management of environmentally sound artificial environments and of elements and system-design technologies and methods, and who are willing to undertake their studies with a creative and flexible mindset.

Department of Information Media and Environment Sciences (45 students)

This department aims to prepare independent personnel who can work as system development engineers, designers and system analysts to support core information systems and information-media technologies with an understanding of information system safety and information analysis and modelling. The department seeks a broad range of students who have an interest in fields relating to this major, who possess both a basic knowledge of information media and mathematical analysis, and who are eager to expand their awareness in their chosen specialties while unearthing and solving problems independently with a desire to contribute to their academic development.

Department of Innovation Management and Environmental Sciences (11 students)

This department aims to prepare graduates who can get involved and contribute to the planning, execution and evaluation of innovative projects and innovation-promotion policies in the private sector, think tanks, industrial development organizations and central and local governments. The department seeks students who want to conduct research on the underlying approaches to innovation promotion, the fundamental knowledge that determines the conditions by which innovation is accepted in response to changes in human and social environments, and the global environmental issues, which should be solved by innovation.

Department of Risk Management and Environmental Sciences (37 students)

This department seeks to prepare graduates with research skills and a high level of expertise and sound judgment who will play a core role both in the public and private sectors in the fields of ecological conservation, chemical-substance risk management, industrial safety control, social system safety management and urban disaster prevention. The department seeks persons who possess a basic concept of the risks associated with human, animal and other living environments as well as with industrial and urban accidents and disasters, and who are eager to acquire the expertise and techniques required for their evaluation and remediation.

Doctoral Program

Doctoral Program (48 student admitted per year)

The program seeks applications from a broad range of applicants across both humanities and sciences who have the potential to contribute to the resolution of issues in natural, artificial, and information environments and to the realization of a sustainable society as experts working in the context of diverse environmental problems, rapidlyevolving information science and social innovations.

Department of Environment and Natural Sciences (12 students)

This department aims to convey an ideal global environment for mankind based on a holistic approach to complex, hierarchical terrestrial life systems, from molecular and cellular-level micro systems to terrestrial and ecological macro systems. The department is therefore seeking motivated applicants who want to realize this aim as enthusiastic researchers, engineers and managers, namely:

  1. Persons with a broad interest in natural and living phenomena who possess a strong motivation to tackle global environmental issues with original ideas.
  2. Persons who are capable of undertaking both indoor experiments and outdoor field surveys with a strong sense of persistence.
  3. Persons who possess their own thoughts on the future of the global environment, are capable of serious contemplation of relevant issues, who have a creative vision for the future of the global environment, and who want to work towards the achievement of that future using their expertise and technical capabilities.

Department of Environment and System Sciences (10 students)

This department seeks to contribute to the realization of a recycling-based society by preparing practical and creative graduates who can assume core roles across a broad range of fields while maintaining a global perspective. With this in mind, the major promotes educational research by challenging students with original problems and develops independent problem-solving capabilities with a focus on eco-friendly materials, manufacturing, system design, construction, risk management and environmental material science in order to prepare graduates who are capable of policy making, environmentally conscious manufacturing and detailed consulting. The department seeks motivated applicants capable of thinking through problems in open-minded, creative and practical ways and who possess expertise in the research and development of environmentally friendly materials, environmentally sound artificial environments and the formation, control, maintenance and management of their elements; and system design technologies and methods.

Department of Information Media and Environment Sciences (12 students)

This department prepares graduates with an understanding of information system safety and information analysis and modeling who possess extensive goal-setting and achieving capabilities and who can create new information systems and information-media technologies as information researchers and can create advanced applied systems in the capacity of researchers and developers. The Department Information Media and Environment Sciences seeks a broad range of students who have an interest in fields relating to this major, who possess both a basic and expert knowledge of information media and mathematical analysis, and who are eager to unearth and solve problems independently, while expanding their awareness of their chosen specialties with a desire to contribute to their academic development.

Department of Innovation Management and Environmental Sciences (5 students)

This department aims to prepare graduates who can participate in and make a significant contribution to the planning, execution and evaluation of innovative projects and innovation promotion policies in the private sector, think tanks, industrial development organizations and central and local governments, or alternatively, who can assume a pioneering role in researching the field of innovation management at universities and other research organizations. The Department of Innovation Management and Environmental Sciences therefore seeks students who want to conduct research on the underlying approaches to innovation promotion, the fundamental knowledge which determines the conditions by which innovation is accepted in response to changes in human and social environments, and the global environmental issues which should be solved by innovation.

Department of Risk Management and Environmental Sciences (9 students)

The Risk Management and Environmental Sciences department seeks to prepare graduates with research skills and a high level of expertise and sound judgment who will play a core role both in the public and private sectors in the fields of ecological conservation, chemical-substance risk management, industrial safety control, social-system safety management and urban disaster prevention. The department seeks a broad range of individuals who want to play a key role by developing a high level of expertise and a keen global perspective and acquiring advanced research, planning and development skills in the field of risk management, based on an awareness of social structures and social factors.
